The 2024 AHOS Residency Program has recently concluded, leaving a lasting impression on all who participated. Held under the esteemed leadership of His Eminence Metropolitan SABA, Metropolitan of North America and Canada, and Rt. Rev. Bishop THOMAS, AHOS Spiritual Advisor. This two-week intensive program, held at the Antiochian Village in western Pennsylvania, USA, brought together students from diverse academic backgrounds—including MTS (Master of Theological Studies), SSC (St. Stephen’s Certificate), MDiv (Master of Divinity), MPCC (Master of Pastoral Care and Counseling), PhD in Orthodox Studies, and DMin (Doctor of Ministry)—for a period of immersive learning, spiritual enrichment, and communal living.
A Foundation of Worship and Spiritual Life
Central to the Residency was the rhythm of daily worship, which provided the spiritual framework for the entire program. Participants began each day with Orthros (morning prayers), anchoring themselves in the rich liturgical tradition of the Orthodox Church. Divine Liturgies and Vespers also took place on certain days, which not only offered opportunities for communal worship but also deepened the participants’ connection to spiritual living. These sacred services were more than a routine; they were the heartbeat of the Residency, infusing each day with a sense of purpose and divine presence.
Rigorous Academic Engagement
The academic component of the Residency was equally robust, with students engaging in a rigorous schedule of lectures, seminars, and group discussions. The curriculum was meticulously designed to challenge the students intellectually while also fostering a deep understanding of Orthodox theology, history, and pastoral practice. Courses covered a broad range of topics, tailored to the specific needs of each program track.
For instance, MTS and SSC students delved into subjects like Liturgical Theology, Scripture Studies, and Church History, guided by distinguished faculty members who brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the classroom. MDiv students focused on advanced theological studies, pastoral care, and practical ministry skills, essential for their future roles in the Church. PhD and DMin candidates engaged in high-level research discussions, exploring complex theological issues and contributing original insights to the field of Orthodox studies.
The faculty at AHOS, renowned for their academic credentials and deep commitment to Orthodox spirituality, played a crucial role in shaping the educational experience. They not only imparted knowledge but also mentored students, encouraging them to integrate their academic learning with their spiritual lives.
Building a Vibrant Community
Beyond academics, the Residency was a time for building relationships and fostering a sense of community. The shared experience of living, studying, and worshiping together created a unique environment where students could form deep connections with one another and with their instructors. The communal aspect of the Residency was vital, as it reflected the Orthodox understanding of the Church as a community of believers, journeying together in faith.
Meals, informal gatherings, and group activities provided additional opportunities for fellowship and the exchange of ideas. These interactions were not just social; they were integral to the formation of a cohesive learning community. Students from different backgrounds and cultures came together, learning from each other’s perspectives and experiences, enriching the overall educational experience.
The Culmination: A Ceremony of Achievement
A highlight of the residency was the Graduation Ceremony, held at the end of Week 1. This special event celebrated the academic and spiritual achievements of the 31 graduates, who were honored for their dedication, perseverance, and commitment to their studies. The ceremony beautifully combined tradition, joy, and solemnity, marking a significant milestone in the lives of the graduates. It was a testament to their hard work and a reminder of their ongoing journey of faith and learning.
AHOS is profoundly grateful for the enduring contributions of its esteemed professors. In particular, we recognize the V. Rev. Father Joseph Antypas, whose tireless efforts since the school’s inception in 1980 have helped build this academic institution. As a distinguished professor of dogmatics, he has greatly shaped the theological foundation of our students.
We also honor the V. Rev. Father George Shalhoub, who has spent 35 years teaching, preaching, and igniting a flame within countless hearts and minds, guiding them toward the light of Christ.
Additionally, we acknowledge the V. Rev. Father Patrick Viscuso, who has vigorously taught canon law for 25 years, guiding and supervising students as they write their theses.
During the graduation ceremony, AHOS also expressed its deep gratitude for the invaluable support of the Association of Theological Schools (ATS), which has played a pivotal role in helping the school attain accreditation and continually elevate its academic and organizational standards. We are especially thankful for the esteemed leaders: Dr. Frank Yamada, who
served as the keynote speaker, along with Dr. Emmanuel Naynadov and Dr. Lester Ruise.
Inspiring Address
A highlight of the Residency was the two Orientation Sessions, where Fr. Michel, AHOS president delivered two profound and inspiring addresses. He emphasized the importance of perseverance in both spiritual and academic pursuits. He encouraged students to strive for what he termed the “Patristic mind,” a way of thinking deeply rooted in the teachings of the Church Fathers. This journey, he explained, involves healing the ethos—transforming one’s character—and attaining true freedom through a love for wisdom and knowledge. His addresses set the tone for the Residency, inspiring students to approach their studies with a sense of purpose and dedication.
Fr. Fadi Rabbat, the academic dean presented a fervent and compelling talk at the
graduation ceremony, urging the graduates and the students to fully engage with the profound doctrines of Orthodox teaching. His statements, akin to a prophetic cry, urged them to exemplify the fervor, sagacity, and dedication of the prophets, apostles, and Church Fathers. He implored them not only to get knowledge but to assimilate and embody the sacred truths of the faith, transforming themselves into beacons of divine wisdom and vessels of the Holy Spirit, like to the saints of Orthodoxy, who would lead and enlighten the faithful on the journey of redemption.
A Holistic Approach to Education
Under the leadership of Father Elias Boulos and his staff, The AHOS Residency Program is distinguished by its holistic approach to education, which seeks to integrate academic excellence with spiritual formation. This theology is grounded in the belief that true knowledge is not merely intellectual but also spiritual, requiring the cultivation of both the mind and the heart. Throughout the Residency, this integrated approach was evident in the seamless blending of rigorous academic instruction with opportunities for prayer, reflection, and community life.
Students were not just learning about Orthodox theology; they were living it. The Residency provided a space where they could deepen their understanding of the faith while also growing in their personal spiritual lives.
During each service, two students were assigned to preach, allowing them
to practice homiletics. This holistic approach is a hallmark of AHOS,
reflecting its commitment to forming well-rounded individuals who are not
only knowledgeable but also spiritually mature and ready to serve both the
Church and the world.
Looking Ahead: Continuing the Journey
As the 2024 Residency Program concludes, students and faculty alike are left with a deep sense of accomplishment and spiritual renewal. The experiences of these two weeks will continue to resonate in the lives of all who participated, guiding them as they return to their respective communities and continue their academic and spiritual journeys.
The AHOS Residency Program has once again demonstrated its unique role in Orthodox hybrid education, providing a transformative experience that prepares students not just for academic success, but for a lifetime of faithful service. As participants move forward, they carry with them the knowledge, relationships, and spiritual insights gained during this intensive period—tools that will serve them well in their future endeavors.
